EVALUATING MATERIALS FOR USE

Developed from Curriculum Mapping: A Guide to Unitarian Universalist Curricula.

Following is a tool for reviewing curriculum that looks at the congregation and material to see how well the material and needs of the congregation match. Material that does not match perfectly can still be used, but the comparison will give an indications of the adaptations that may be needed, such as changing the scheduling or teaching arrangements. The questions can also be used as guidelines in development of curriculum.

What are the themes of interest to the congregation?

Has the religious education program identified key themes that need to be included in lifespan Religious Education Program?
THEME:
Is the theme/description of the curriculum clear?

Is the theme general (social justice)or specific (domestic violence, children's issues)?

Is this the theme of interest of only a few individuals?

GOALS:

Have the overall goals of religious education been defined? (Part of visioning)

GOALS:
Are the goals/objectives of the curriculum consistent with those of the religious education program?

AGE GROUP AND GROUP SIZE:
What is the age group and size for which the curriculum is to be used?

How consistent is attendance, both numerically and by composition?

Are there other distinct features of the group?

AGE GROUP AND GROUP SIZE:
What is the expected age group and group size?

Can the material be easily adapted beyond the group?

Is regular attendance required for continuity or the continuation of activities?

Will the material fit with the group?

SPACE NEEDS:
Define the space available for the group.

Is the space shared with other groups/renters?

Can items created by the group be displayed?

What are the space requirements for the curriculum?

Is the space available adequate for the activities of the curriculum?

NUMBER OF SESSIONS:
How many sessions are available in the calendar?

Is the session being scheduled for Sunday morning or an alternate time?

Can sessions be combined? Rearranged in order? Omitted? without losing the impact and intent?

LENGTH OF SESSIONS:
What is the usual length of time available?

LENGTH OF SESSIONS:
What is the expected length of a session? Can this be altered?

LEADER TRAINING/PREPARATION:
What preparation and experience is needed for the teachers?

Do leaders prefer to do their own preparation or to have resources collected for them?

How many teachers are available for this curriculum?

LEADER TRAINING/PREPARATION:
Is specific teacher training recommended? If so, how available is this training?

How many teachers are required?

How much preparation is indicated?

OTHER PREPARATION:
Some themes or topics need to be discussed with the religious education committee or congregation before using.
