SCAVENGER
HUNT
Following
is a survey that can be used in a church related to the components of
a balanced program. Additional items may be added by the
congregation. The one component, Youth/Adult Relations, does not have
a separate section here: it is suggested that the hunt be an
intergenerational event – and possibly that the youth even
invite adults to join them.
Social
Action/Social Justice
What
causes that are evident?
What
kind of activities can you find?
What
do they call these activities? (Social Action, Social Justice, Faith
in Action, Other?)
Worship What
in a church that tells about how the congregation worships?
What
religious symbols did you find?
Find
an order of service. Bring it with you. Is there anything unusual
about it—different than you are used to? What do you
especially like about the order of service?
What
is used for songs and readings?
Pick
out one song and one reading that the group likes. Bring it back
to the group, if possible.
Community
Building (Activities/Fellowship)
What
is welcoming here?
Is
there a church directory? How current is it? What information
about the congregation does it include?
How
accessible is this facility? (For people with mobility or sensory
impairment? Other needs?)
Does
your congregation have a Small Group Ministry program? How do you
know?
What
community building activities are evident?
Is
there a newsletter? Does it include information on activities in
Religious Education? For youth?
Learning
What
opportunities are there in your congregation for learning, and
for what ages? What do you see that tells what is being taught?
Is the
learning environment suitable for the age group? How do you know?
What
information is there about Unitarian Universalism?
Are
the Unitarian Universalist Principles evident?
Leadership
Who
are the leaders of the church (name positions)? Where do you find
this information?
Can
you find: an annual report?
Can
you find a report of meetings of the governing body (Board,
Council, etc.) or committees?
