DR. SEUSS AND UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISTS
OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!

SETTING THE STAGE
STORY SYNPOSIS: Tells of all types of adventures, of good times and not so good. (10 minutes)

AFFIRMATIONS: Everyone is important.
We are always learning
THEME: Adventure

PREPARATION: Think of times when things have gone really well, and times when there seem to be detours or bumps in the road. Oh, and also reflect on the 'waiting' times.

NEEDED: Oh, the Places You'll Go!, Random House, 1990
Game sheet, cards and marker, space markers for participants (buttons, small stones, shells)

SESSION PLAN
OPENING: Selected by the group. This can be used each session.

CHECK-IN: Welcome. Each person says his or her name. Allow time for each person to briefly tell something that went well since the group last met, or something that did not go well.

Leave an empty chair or space for someone who is missing from the group that day, or to recognize that others are welcome to be invited to join the group.

STORY
Oh, the Places You'll Go!

EXPLORING:
Reflecting
Where would you like to go in the next few years?
What would you like to do as you get older?
What have you done that makes you feel good?
What have you done or what has happened to make you feel "down"?
Have you ever had to wait for something or someone?

Activity options:
Adventure game or walk:
Game: See "Oh, the Places You'll Go" Game. Make cards and have space markers for each participant (button, small stone, shell)

This could also be done as a walk. Mark out a spiral, and place several cards turned upside down at different places along the spiral. Participants start in the middle, could walk between the piles of cards, stopping to pick cards and give examples of 'up' or 'down' or 'waiting'.

CLOSING
Participants in a circle, hold hands at side. Slowly raise arms together up over heads, and chant

"Today is MY day! Oh, the places I'll go!"

GROUP REVIEW
What did they like about the session? (theme, activities, someone special being there, etc.)

Announce the story for the next session and who will be the adult facilitator, or if there are special events in the time before they meet again.

OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO GAME
Directions
Make 20 cards. On 8 cards write 'UP"; on 8 cards write 'DOWN"; and on 4 cards write "WAITING'. Mix cards and turn cards over.

Participant rolls dice and moves the number of spaced indicated. Note that the numbers are arranged in a spiral.

Landing on "Take Card" space: Draw card. If 'UP', say something positive that you can do to get ahead. If 'DOWN" card, say something that might hold you from going forward. If "WAITING', tell something you have to wait for and miss a turn.
